“The Forge is part of a unique, vibrant, inner city development in Calgary,” explains Jason Whitfield, Kanas Corporation, the EPRO Installer and General Contractor. “It is adjacent to the University of Calgary and part of land intended to be used for new, environmentally friendly buildings. It was acquired under a 100 to 150 year lease, which was designed to encourage overall development and bring new energy to the area.”

According to the Kanas website, the building’s name, The Forge, refers to the concept of being "forged in steel" and “was chosen to represent Kanas' commitments to building strong, long-lasting and quality construction.” The structure has a Built Green Platinum High Density certification, and sustainable elements include an ICF building envelope, triple-pane windows, and a Comfort Cooling air conditioning system.

Kanas collaborated with EPRO to select and install the below grade waterproofing system, and E.Proformance shoring was determined to be best for this low-risk site. “We didn’t have any groundwater issues, so this was a basic foundation waterproofing system. Whitfield explains. Ultimately, 6,500 square feet was installed.

“We self-performed the install,” he explains. “It was an extremely predictable product to work with and flawless to install. Fortunately, we started this part of the project in the spring so there were no weather issues.”

E.Proformance is a spray applied system. This method can save time during the application process, as compared to installation times of traditional peel and stick systems. It can also be applied over green concrete. E.Proformance is ideal for below-grade building foundations not subjected to constant hydrostatic pressure but that require waterproofing protection and a single source warranty for both waterproofing and contamination such as methane gas, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or aeromantic hydrocarbons.

Kanas and EPRO have collaborated on many past projects, and Whitfield appreciates the dymanic between the two companies. “Our past experience with EPRO has been very cost effective and amenable to tight construction schedules,” he says.
