Perhaps one of the most iconic of Las Vegas’ resorts, the Venetian has been open and welcoming guests since 1999. This world-class destination evokes old-world Italy, punctuated with modern, innovative architectural features. While it has many attractions, the rooftop pool – which spans approximately two acres – is a huge draw in the hot Vegas months, and can also be considered somewhat of a structural wonder.

Designed to mimic the Italian Riviera, the new pool deck has a total of five pools with a slew of cabanas and places for patrons to lounge. Before welcoming guests, however, the hard work of protecting and waterproofing the site had to be completed, and EPRO’s products played a key role in ensuring the successful opening of this elegant destination.

As the deck is located directly on top of the casino and resort, everything had to first be removed – planters, decorative items, trees. In total, about three acres of structural deck was open to the elements and stripped directly down to the original concrete structure, which was then entirely remodeled.

“About three acres of structural deck was exposed before the waterproofing system was installed,” says Cid Caba, Waterproofing Consultant, Independent Roofing Consultants. “Pool decks are incredibly challenging and here, we had to work to a very, very tight schedule as the construction pace is phenomenal.”

The debris and dust from this specific area was another challenge that only a product like EPRO’s E.Protect+ could successfully mitigate.

“Las Vegas has high wind conditions that are compounded by the high-rise construction adjacent to the pool deck causing vortex wind conditions around and adjacent to the pool deck,” says Caba. “This product allowed us to work around demolition conditions where excessive dust and debris was encountered during ongoing demolition while the waterproofing was being installed.”

In total, 112,000 square feet of E.Protect+ was used to waterproof the entire deck. The team was especially appreciative of installation speed and continuous EPRO onsite assistance from the team.

“We had to choose EPRO: It sets up extremely quickly, installation time is fast, and everything worked out really well,” says Caba.

As the product was installed during the winter, weather was not ideal; it was often rainy and damp. To ensure that the system was up to standard, continuous vector testing was conducted for potential breaches or issues during and after installation. EPRO product was also more flexible than others selected, making it ideal for the Vegas extremes in temperature – a year-round occurrence that has the potential to affect structural integrity of building systems. “Some of the biggest pool deck areas in the world are in Vegas, and this was no exception,” says Caba. “Another benefit to the EPRO system was that it has the right elasticity to compensate for thermal movement – a must in this location where it gets extremely hot during the day and can cool off significantly at night.”

Utilizing a revolutionary Redundant Field-Installed Composite Design philosophy, EPRO’s E.Series systems represent the evolution of its products over the past 20 years. This evolution is demonstrated in the three types of E.Series systems – E.Protect+ is used when performance is paramount.

The Venetian pool deck was completed in June 2019. The architect was JZA+D, and the general contractor was Team Construction. Installation was completed by Southwest Specialty Contracting, and the waterproofing consultant was Independent Roofing Consultants.
